Glossary I & J
-
- ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol):
- ICMP is included so "status messages" can be returned to the sender of a data packets.
- IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics):
- A standard used for connecting hard drives, CD / DVD drives
and tape drives to computers. IDE is based on an IBM PC 16 bit standard,
Two devices may be connected on a single ribbon cable.
It is relatively simple, inexpensive and the IDE device carries its own control circuitry.
- Import:
- Means to open a file from one program in another program.
The Import command alters the way a file and its information are saved so they can be understood and manipulated by another program.
- Infrastructure Mode:
- In wireless networking it refers to joining a wireless network
to a wired Ethernet network. It also supports a central connection point
(a hub) for WLAN clients.
A wireless access point (AP) is required for infrastructure mode wireless networking. All wireless clients must be configured with the same SSID and Pre-Shared Key (password).
- IP (Internet Protocol):
- A set of rules governing the transmission of data from one
computer to another over the Internet. IP assigns each computer a unique address
(32 bit number).
The data is transferred in small segments called packets.
- ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network):
- It is a set of standards that let a single wire or fiber-optic cable
carry voice, digital network services (eg: Internet) and video.
You can let one channel transmit data and the other voice communication.
The data rate can be up to 128kbps if both channels are used for data, dropping back to 64kbps when one of the channels are used for voice communications.
This allows you to receive a phone call with out interrupting your Internet connection.
- Jitter:
- Refers to some offset of time and space from the norm.
In network transmission, it is the variable arrival of data packets.
