Glossary G & H
-
- Handle:
- Is a unique identifier (similar to a pointer) that the Windows
operating system uses to pinpoint what you wish to do or request information from.
Handles are used when an application / process references a block of memory.
A pointer contains the address of the item to which it refers, while a handle allows the referenced point to be relocated in memory, without invalidating what it is pointing to. It is associated with memory management.
- Heuristic:
- Heuristics (a branch of artificial intelligence) makes use of past
experiences to make an educated guess about the present.
Heuristic scanning in anti-virus software can self-learn, using artificial intelligence to attempt to block viruses or worms that are not known and the antivirus software does not have a signature yet, to detect or block it.
Heuristics are designed to detect previously unknown viruses.
